Earth experienced a strong-to-severe (G3 to G4) geomagnetic storm on September 26, 2011, sparking active auroras just after sunset with extended periods of active auroras overnight. It was just after midnight on this night that one of the most iconic photographs captured by the AuroraMAX team was taken from the shores of Pontoon Lake near Yellowknife.
